Connecting People to the Outdoors: The Work of a Generation

Minnesotans flocked to the state’s public lands and waters in record numbers during the pandemic. They discovered or rediscovered the extraordinary benefits and joy of connecting to the state’s unique outdoor spaces and recreation opportunities. Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Commissioner Sarah Strommen will join us to talk about how the DNR is ensuring that those opportunities are preserved and enhanced for this and future generations.

The state’s rich outdoor opportunities are available today thanks to the care and investments of past generations, however that same level of foundational investment is not being made today. That’s why the DNR is pursuing a new funding framework for Minnesota that can serve new, returning, and long-time outdoor enthusiasts, and sustainably manage natural resources for generations to come.

Minnesota’s public lands are for all Minnesotans, and the DNR is committed to providing inclusive and equitable access to outdoor spaces. That’s why DNR launched the #MyMNOutdoorAdventure on May 15, in conjunction with the Governor’s Fishing Opener and statewide fishing opener. The aim is to connect with diverse communities, give diverse audiences a platform to tell their stories of outdoor experiences, and to make sure that diverse audiences are represented in the DNR's work.

Abundant, diverse, and healthy natural resources are key factors in what makes Minnesota a great place to live. The DNR works to ensure those special places are protected, managed, and conserved now and into the future.
