Highlights from Last Week’s Meeting
by Darlene Anderson

As folks logged into to the Zoom meeting it was fun to see and hear familiar voices discuss the “Question of the Day “What was your favorite childhood book?” One Rotarian stated he was currently reading his favorite book, having never left childhood!  After President Michelle Buria called the meeting to order, Darlene Anderson gave a brief reflection on how important it was to her as a child to be introduced to the local library by a neighbor who faithfully took her every two weeks to find new books to enjoy.

President-elect Dean Casperson introduced his guest and spouse, Patra Sevastiades. Fellowship reports included Jerry Thoreson stating that he turns 60 on May 19 and is celebrating by asking friends on Facebook to contribute $60 toward the new Rotary Club 25 Children’s Mental Health Initiative Lifts Duluth (CHILD) campaign. Dave Fulda and his wife Terry recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. The picture in the Duluth News Tribune showed Dave with a full head of hair! Chana Stocke received an award for being a top mortgage broker in Minnesota.

Next Thursday, May 21 at 2:00 p.m. will be our annual Roadside Clean-Up. We will meet at Clearwater Grill on the North Shore Drive. Please bring gloves and mask. When the work is completed, we will gather in President Michelle's driveway for beverages, snacks and fellowship.

A $4,000 check was presented to Sue McClernon for Guiding Star Women's Center of Duluth. The center provides a residence for women who are pregnant and homeless. While there the women work on education, parenting skills, and other goals.

Last year our Duck Pluck was very successful as we raised $25,000 for the Boys and Girls Club's Mental Health Program. With the COVID 19 impacting large community events, this year Club #25, in partnership with our own Foundation, has launched a new campaign called CHILD. We already have four major sponsors who have contributed $5,000: Lake Assault Boats, UHL, Interim Healthcare, and North Shore Bank of Commerce. Dean Casperson, Dave Nolle, and Foundation President Al Makynen explained how donations can be made to the campaign through an internet giving platform. For more details on the campaign and to make a donation, visit the website www.givebutter.com/child-duluth  The Rotary Club of Duluth Foundation (our local foundation) has issued a dollar for dollar matching challenge grant of up to $10,000 for contributions by individuals. Rotarian are asked to share the campaign on social media with friends and family.  With your help we can raise the $25,000 for mental health.  This year’s grant recipient will be the Boys and Girls Club Mental Health Program.

President-Elect Dean Casperson introduced today's speakers Carmella Hatch and Sue Schumacher from “Every Child Ready Duluth” which is a Duluth Public Library and community collaboration to help improve reading skills for children. Carmella noted that less than 42% of children entering Duluth schools are considered “ready to learn”. The goal is to assist children to improve their reading skills. Every Child Ready Duluth coordinates their work with other organizations to make the library a space for families.

The result is enhancement of existing community programs to better address the needs of all Duluth families.  A truly collaborative program.
