Highlights from Last Week’s Meeting
By Darlene Anderson

With the ringing of the Rotary bell those in the Ballroom stood and those on Zoom paid attention as President Dean Casperson welcomed everyone and lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance and The Rotary Four-Way Test.  His Rotary Reflection refined “Service Above Self” with quotations from throughout history including: “Everybody can be great because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to have your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “Start by doing what's necessary; then do what's possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.”-- St Francis of Assisi.

Membership Chair Zach Walters introduced Rotary Club 25's newest member Brian Fulda who was sponsored by Mark Peterson and Dave Fulda. Brian has worked with his uncle Dave Fulda for 17 years at Johnson Carpet One. He is married with two sons. He enjoys working with youth especially in the realm of sports. Chana Stocke asked if he was as loud as his uncle to which Brian replied that he is shyer but more active. Welcome, Brian.

Chair of the Day and Past Assistant Governor Phil Strom welcomed and introduced District 5580 Governor Bob McLean who has been a member of the Central Lakes Rotary Club (Pequot Lakes) for 20 years. Bob has served in many positions both in his Club and in the District, including twice as Club President, Assistant Governor, Executive Finance Committee, Grants Committee and more.  He is a member of the Paul Harris Society and was the 2006 District Rotarian of the Year.

Governor Bob congratulated Club 25 for all the remarkable projects and ways we serve both our local community and the world. Rotary's major effort Polio Plus - the eradication of polio - continues. With the onset of Covid-19 Rotary has had to suspend their work of immunization but are still seeing positive results from the many years of effort. In the last weeks there have been no new cases of polio reported in either Pakistan or Afghanistan. This month Nigeria should be declared polio free as they reach the three year mark of no new cases.

Bob then shared the priorities of Rotary International President Holger Knaack.  His challenge to every Club and every Club President is to make membership meaningful and memorable. Part of the process is to have road map of what the club wants to accomplish that is impactful and sustainable. Do not be afraid to try new things. And also be sure to have FUN working together.

And he reminded us of a few dates: October 24, 2020 is World Polio Day. Do something FUN that contributes to PolioPlus.  April 21-May 1, 2021 is the District Conference to be held in Bemidji with the theme of “Legendary Service”.
