Highlights from Last Week’s Meeting
By Darlene Anderson
'Twas a cold, wintery day in Duluth as Rotarians and guests gathered in the Holiday Inn Ballroom. Warm holiday greetings were shared and conversations around the tables were brought to a close when President-Elect Gary Melander rang the Rotary bell. All joined in the Pledge of Allegiance and the Rotary Four-Way Test, Vinod Gupta reflected on the “power of suggestion” noting that we must be careful in how we talk to ourselves and who we associate with as it affects our outlook on life.

Past Assistant District Governor Phil Strom shared a Eulogy for Earl Rogers who passed away on December 7. Earl grew up in Boston and after serving in the Air Force came to Duluth as an Air Traffic Controller. Here he met and married his wife and companion Judy. Together they operated a motorcycle business and then “Duluth Travel Agency”. It was Earl's passion for the mission and values of Rotary that impacted his life and that of many others. He served as Governor of District 5580 and was a founding member of Skyline Rotary Club. He and Judy attended so many international conferences that they lost count. One of his greatest accomplishments was the idea and implementation of the IBSTAR program which brought young professionals from former Eastern bloc countries to the Twin Ports to work as interns in their chosen fields. He and Judy hosted many of the interns in their home and continue those relationships decades later. Earl truly exemplified servant leadership. He is survived by his wife Judy, daughter Judy Metry and son Tony Rogers. The family prefers that memorials be directed to The Rotary Foundation c/o Duluth Rotary or to The Duluth Rotary Foundation.
“Mr. Rotary”,
Earl Rogers His life defined as “Service Above Self”
To honor and remember Earl Rogers all stood for a moment of silent reflection.
Several club members came forward to “Kick the Golden Can”. Past-President Chana Stocke will be leaving us for three months as she spends the winter months in sunny Florida. Returning to the Northland is Skeeter Moore. He spent three months in Sweden refreshing his Swedish language skills and watching his son Meirs Moore play hockey and scoring several goals and assists. And Jack Seiler found his son's picture on page 3 of the Duluth News Tribune today.
Chair of the Day
Patra Sevastiades introduced Dr. Holger Glatzel who had a leading role in the development of the mirrors for the
James Webb Space Telescope and joined us via Zoom from California. (Dr. Glatzel is also Patra's brother-in-law.)

Many Rotarians remember the
Hubble Telescope, launched in 1990, which remains one of the largest and most versatile telescopes in space today. After years of research and development, the James Webb Telescope was launched to find the first galaxies that formed in the early universe. It has
eight times the collection area of the Hubble and is 250 pounds lighter.
James Webb Telescope
One of the challenges in building the telescope was that it had to fold in order to fit into a spacecraft. And the surface of the mirrors had to withstand the temperature range and have a large reflection area. The 18 mirror segments that were developed required extreme precision when fabricated. It took three to four years just to develop the instruments needed for fabricating the mirrors. Once production began it was time-consuming and labor-intensive to build the mirrors. Production was completed and the satellite launched on December 25, 2021 with hopes of looking further into space than ever before as well as looking into the past. The expectations were high and as the first images were released on July 11, 2022, they exceeded those high hopes. For more information on the James Webb Telescope check out
