Highlights from Last Week’s Meeting
By Darlene Anderson
With the ringing of the Rotary bell, President
Barb Perrella gained the attention of Rotarians and guests and welcomed all.
Rob Hofmann's Reflection focused on
Glensheen: a time capsule from 1911 sharing the story of the Congdon family and the history of Duluth. What a treasure for Duluthians and visitors.
President Barb Perrella
Tom Young encouraged everyone to sign up for the
Rotary Auction to be held on May 4 and also to purchase their raffle tickets early. For $100 you receive 100 tickets plus
20 free tickets and by purchasing early, they will be ready for you when you arrive at Marshall School.
Tom Young has such a DEAL for YOU!
It is so rewarding to see the proceeds of our Auction and Rose Sale working in our community and Grants Chair Jack Seiler was able to present three checks. Tracie Clanaugh from First Witness shared that their $2,750 check will be used to support child abuse prevention training and services with the goal of seeing children in our area thrive. The St Louis River Quest check for $1,250 was presented to Phil Marquis. This will help fund their spring educational program where 1,400 6th graders from 15 local elementary schools explore and learn about the St Louis River ecosystem along with commercial, industrial and recreational activities. The program involves five sessions held on the Vista Queen and five more at the DECC. The third check for $3,000 was for Kids Closet. Peg Oman reported that last fall 610 families received warm winter wear and they have expressed their gratitude to “warm-hearted Duluthians”.

Chair of the Day Rob Hofmann introduced UMD graduate and now Marketing Manager of Glensheen Mike Mayou to share “What's New at Glensheen?” The formal gardens of Glensheen were reconstructed last year and redesigned to reflect more closely the garden design from 1908-1910. Since the historic home of the Congdon family was opened as a museum in 1979 with its 12 acres of beauty on the shores of Lake Superior and 39 period furnished rooms, it is considered by many the number one house museum in the United States

A new tour will be offered starting on May 1 called “
Lock and Key”. This is a 90 minute
guided tour featuring some normally not viewed areas. It starts in the vegetable garden, to the carriage house with its display of historic carriages and vehicles, to the boat house, then on to “secret compartments” in the mansion and finishing on
Clara's balcony with the beautiful view of the formal garden and lake.
The popular free Wednesday night events will continue: June is the Beer Garden Series. July and August will be the Concerts on the Pier which will now be from 6:30-8:00 pm. Last summer over 12,500 people enjoyed these events and the staff of Glensheen are looking forward to another great summer.
