Highlights from Last Week’s Meeting
By Phil Strom
We met in a partitioned Lyric Room at the Holiday Inn, where it felt a bit more cramped together than our usual Great Lakes Ballroom, but did nothing to detract from the atmosphere of fellowship that we Rotarians hold dear. President Chana Stocke provided for our opener, first with The Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the Rotary Four-Way Test. Dave Fulda did the honors with our Rotary Reflection on Service above Self, and a thoughtful observation on gratitude. Prospective member, Deb Ellingsen, guest of Steve Yorde, was introduced.

Today’s announcements were first by Jena Evans encouraging everyone to sign up for at least one Club committee. Dan Maki then provided information on a Harbortown Rotary bicycling fundraiser, COGGS. Past President Michele Buria was invited to the podium by RI Foundation Committee Chair Phil Strom, to receive her level three Paul Harris pin with 2 sapphires. She briefly took the mike to make the case for becoming a “sustaining member” for The Rotary Foundation by contributing annually at least $100.

Our guest speaker, Bill Tobin, accompanied by his wife Sherie, was introduced by Past Assistant Governor Al Makynen. Bill Tobin told the story of “ShelterBox” and how it has grown from a “Millennial Project” by a small club in England, whose goal was to provide disaster relief kits for 10 families, to an international organization that has to date provided emergency shelter and assistance for over 2 million worldwide. ShelterBox warehouses are strategically aligned around the world to provide relief from disasters both natural and conflict originated. Rotary is only one of several strategic global partners, including the United Nations, International Red Cross, and Habitat for Humanity. ShelterBox works at providing disaster relief kits that are customized for the specific situation and include items such as tools, cooking kits, tents, and tarps and more. This is truly important altruistic work, done by passionate volunteers.
