Highlights from Last Week’s Meeting

Even though there has been a recent surge in COVID-19 the Club continues its hybrid format of in-person meetings with Zoom. There were four chairs at each table, sanitizer available at registration, with some members wearing masks. President Chana Stocke called the meeting to order with Dave Fulda giving a Rotary Reflection on our Club’s resilience to adversity and our ability to gather and encourage one another.

The 36th Annual Rotary Rose Sale was kicked off by Jon Ohman. There was some mention that the Rose Sale has been going on since before he was born. Not quite the truth, but the sale has been beneficial to all concerned! Each member was given a packet of materials and 30 tickets. Although the expectation is that you sell 30, with the community awaiting the annual sale, and with the current promotions on radio, television, billboards, and yard signs, people will be receptive and most likely you will be able to sell 50!

With sadness, President Chana Stocke announced the recent deaths of Past President Ken Schoen and former member Bob Poulter before making the introduction of today’s speaker, District Governor Keith Brokke.
District Governor Keith Brokke is a charter member of the Fargo Moorhead AM Rotary Club. Keith and his wife Lynne are Major Donors and Paul Harris Society members of the Rotary International Foundation. He is a member of the Air National Guard. In March of 2022, he and Lynne will celebrate 50 years of marriage. His message to us today is about Rotary’s mission in the world and our focus for 2021-22 of to “Serve to Change Lives”.
One way to make a bigger difference in the world is to bring more resources to bear on local, national, and international challenges. A key way to garner those resources is to increase the number of Rotary Clubs and Rotary Members around the world. An interesting comparison is that 30 years ago we had 33,000 clubs and 1.2 million members. Today we have 33,000 clubs and 1.2 million members! Many less clubs in the USA, Canada, and Europe with more clubs and members in the rest of the world. The challenge for us here in the United States and District 5580 is a simple challenge. EACH ONE to BRING ONE into Rotary.
The balance of the presentation was a celebration of Rotary and what we as members in the various Clubs of the District have accomplished in our own communities and around the world. The building of schools and clinics. The providing of clean water and sanitation. The empowerment of girls and young women through financial independence to reduce child labor and poverty. Through grants, service, and travel Rotary makes a difference.
