July 1
st, 2021, a date that will long be remembered as a time of new beginnings and remembrances of things accomplished by Rotarians of the Duluth Rotary of Duluth. Newly installed President
Chana Stocke had a glorious summer day for her Rotary Picnic gathered in a place that is considered hallowed ground to Rotarians far and wide –
ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PEACE PLAZA at ENGER PARK.

The date was September 20, 2013 when partnering area Rotary clubs hosted a program and ribbon-cutting with the City of Duluth to celebrate the opening of the Rotary International Peace Plaza at Enger Park. The event kicked off with a Rotary meeting and program with presentations from local community leaders recognizing the
United Nations National Day of Peace.
"Celebrating the opening of the Peace Plaza will be a monumental event to recognize the international ties that our city has established as well as Rotary's efforts toward peace and conflict resolution," Phil Strom said in 2013. "Area Rotary clubs are looking forward to sharing the message of peace with our communities and to encourage others to create “Peace through Service."
The Peace Plaza Project, began in 2012 under the tenure of then Club President Al Makynen, was made possible because of the generosity of members from our Club, Harbortown Rotary, Duluth/Superior Eco-Rotary, North Shore Rotary, Skyline Rotary along with grants from Rotary District 5580 and Westmoreland Endowment Fund of the Rotary Club of Duluth along with financial assistance from the City of Duluth. The total investment in the plaza was $156,000 for landscaping, foundations, mosaic, and peace plaques. Another addition to a high profile, often visited, jewel of a park!
