Finland recently celebrated its 100th year of independence. Jeff’s multi-media presentation takes you on a music-filled journey to remarkable Finland. Together we learn more about this significant Nordic country, share Finland’s struggles to gain and keep its independence, and celebrate the Finn’s outstanding contributions to the world.
Christmas carols sung by the Rotary Singers welcomed Rotarians and guests as they gathered for the annual Holiday party in the Great Lakes Ballroom of the Holiday Inn. Santa Claus joined in the celebration and was willing to have pictures taken with smiling Rotarians as they shared their Christmas wishes.
A warm welcome was extended by President– Elect Steve Yorde. Past President Dick Carlson's invocation reminded each of us to offer gratitude to our Creator for the blessings that came our way in 2017 and to seek guidance for the coming year.
Filling in for Fellowship Reporter Jena Evans, who was at home caring for a sick little one, was Sheryl Homan. This past week Deb Medlin delivered the auditor's report to the Duluth School Board. Also coming forward to kick the Golden Can was Wipfli co-worker Tom Eling. Heard on KQ promoting the South Pier Inn was Branden Robinson. Owner Betty George Sola stepped forward to pay the work zone fine. Seen in a DNT article were the words “Things are getting bigger and heavier”, but Adele Yorde was not making reference to hubby Steve Yorde. Instead it is the gigantic boiler making its way to the Clure Public Marine Terminal and points beyond. The monster-sized thing is 350 feet long and weighs in at 442 tons.
A thankful Dick Swenson added to the Golden Can. As many knew, Dick suffered a heart attack with a total blockage. He was thankful to the doctors who immediately treated him and now he is able to continue enjoying life. We, too, are thankful that you are still with us, Dick.
A picture is better than a thousand words, so from the Gimlet pictures you can see, the fun that was had as we celebrated the season with a “Gift Swap Exchange” and drawing of names for those who would take home a plate of cookies to share with family and friends. Thank you, Special Events Committee, for making this a joyous and festive party!
