Highlights from Last Week’s Meeting
By Renee Burns

Rotarians gathered the West Dining Room at the Kitchi Gammi Club and were called to order by President Elizabeth Simonson who led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Four Way Test. Greg Hansen gave an insightful Reflection tied to the Annual Rotary Rose Sale.  He started by saying when he received his rose tickets in the mail his first thought was “not again, I’m not comfortable asking people to buy roses”.  After that question - he asked another, “why do we sell roses?”  The three reasons he came up with are good ones to think about as we enter another year of selling roses that translate to our ability to make grants for the benefit of our community.

  1. We sell roses to bring joy to friends, family and neighbors.
  2. There is energy that comes from the rose sale.
  3. Because of the rose sale we are able to do great things in our community and globally because we make the effort to sell roses.  Our rose sale funds help us do great work, and for that we should ALL be grateful.

Guests for the meeting included our speaker, Dan Tranter, new member Matt Baumgartner and Dan Mosley, all of whom received a warm Rotary welcome.

There were several self-reports for the day.  Past President and Assistant Governor Al Makynen was recently on a tour of France and visited Omaha Beach and the American Cemetery, site of 9,300 soldiers.  Greg Hansen was in Orlando last week and was grateful to get out of Orlando ahead of Hurricane Helene.  The devastation in the area is incredible and he suggested we keep the region in our prayers and support relief operations.  Judy Rogers reported that one of their exchange students from Tallinn, Estonia was coming for a visit 25-years after the exchange.  President Elizabeth Simonson took the opportunity when Judy stepped up to thank her for all the cookies she makes and distributes to Rotary clubs each week.

President Elizabeth Simonson shared there will be a breakfast on Friday, October 11 at 7:30 am at the Kitchi Gammi Club.  No agenda, just fun fellowship at the end of a week.  Past President Barb Perrella reminded us there is no coupon book for the rose sale this year, there is however an amazing prize drawing!  If you purchase a dozen roses you are entered in the drawing, if you donate to the sale, you are entered and if you can get in the drawing just by going to the website - RotaryRoses.com - and entering.  The deadline to enter is October 17.

Renee Burns introduced our newest Rotarian, Matt Baumgartner, President & CEO of the Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce.  Matt is no stranger to Club #25, he has given programs and is very, very active in the community and is the proud dad of Ruby and Benny and husband of Amanda.  Matt stated he is active in many boards and organizations but is particularly happy to be joining Club #25 and excited to become active in the club.  He was actually active in helping make our typically poor performing microphone work prior to the meeting!  Welcome to Rotary Club of Duluth #25!

Chair of the Day Jon Ohman introduced our speaker Dan Tranter, the supervisor of the Indoor Air Unit at the Minnesota Department of Health.  Jon noted that in his job as a professional mechanical engineer for more than 40 years he designed mechanical systems for buildings.  The designs are required to conform to codes and indoor air quality is serious business.

Dan travels to a few Rotary clubs each year to talk about the dangers lurking in homes and to remind folks to be aware of them and resolve them.  There are three specific dangers that he provides information about, radon, mold and moisture and carbon monoxide.

Radon is a colorless and odorless gas that comes from the soil.  The gas is naturally present and can go from the ground into our homes.  It is estimated that 21,000 people die each year in the US from lung cancer due to radon exposure.  Be aware that radon is a serious concern in Minnesota.  The average radon level in Minnesota is more than three times higher than average.  Any home can have a radon problem, no matter the type of foundation.  There are ways to test for radon as well as mitigate the risk in your home.  If you have concerns about your home, there are short term tests as well as long term tests.

Mold is a type of fungus and mold spores will grow under the right conditions, moderate temperatures, nutrients and moisture.  You can bring spores in from the outdoors on your shoes for instance, but you need the help of other conditions for it to take hold.  Mold can effect your health in very negative ways, from coughing to a runny nose to wheezing and a sore throat.  Mold is not something to ignore as it can be toxic if not dealt with.  If you have moisture present you need to identify where it’s coming from and deal with it.

Carbon monoxide is sneaky.  It’s an odorless and colorless gas produced whenever a material burns and may be present in your home without you being aware of it.  If you, your family members and pets all feel like you’ve come down with flu symptoms, but feel better when you leave the house, you very likely may have carbon monoxide poisoning.  Common sources of carbon monoxide in our homes include fuel burning appliances like water heaters, clothes dryers, furnaces and fireplaces.  Be sure your appliances are venting properly and install a carbon monoxide/fire alarm within 10 feet of each bedroom in your home.  The new alarms don’t need to be replaced as often and will last five to seven years.

For more information on ensuring you have a healthy home and environment visit the Minnesota Department of Health website:  www.health.state.mn.us/communities.

President Elizabeth Simonson thanked Dan for his presentation and Dan drew the 50/50 ticket for a $45 pot won by Jeff Fifield.
