Highlights from Last Week’s Meeting

Thanks to the very talented Jerry Thoreson, Rotarians attending in-person and via Zoom were treated to a slide show featuring snapshots of President Chana Stocke’s leadership from the past year.
President Chana Stocke rang the bell and called the meeting to order. Rotarians sang the National Anthem with Past President John Baumgarten on the piano and recited the Rotary 4-way Test.
Assistant Governor Tricia Bunten shared a gratitude-focused reflection highlighting the service of the Rotary President and other Rotary leadership. Rotary leadership is an honor that comes with both excitement and anxiousness.

President Chana Stocke announced that Rotary history had been made as
FY 2023 Rotary International President Jennifer Jones was named the first female president of Rotary International. President
Chana Stocke shared a message from football great Vince Lombardi, reminding everyone that leadership is not just a title but is a trait shown by action and example.

Past Club #25 member Don Melander joined the meeting as a guest of soon to be President-Elect Gary Melander, and it was noted that Don remains the record holder of the most 50/50 wins in club history—though his son Gary Melander cannot be far behind! And future Club #25 member Jeff Wenzel was introduced as a guest of Mike Orman’s.

Allen Anway self-reported that he was working as a ham radio operator at mile marker #5 of Grandma’s Marathon when he saw beloved Holiday Inn wait staff, Diane, sprint by on her way to…maybe her best race time ever? Past Assistant District Governor
Phil Strom self-reported and paid a fine recognizing all the “busy women” who make a difference, including the newly elected Rotary International President,
Jennifer Jones, featured in this month’s
Rotarian Magazine. Phil also recognized outgoing President
Chana Stocke for her leadership and the fun she brought to Rotary this past year. Past Assistant Governor
Al Makynen stated he was 34 years old when he joined Rotary and only 1% of Rotarians were female. How things have changed over the years with an increase in female membership and RI’s first female president.
Jerry Thoreson paid a fine in honor of his 40th wedding anniversary.

Past Assistant District Governor Phil Strom presented Mike Orman with a Paul Harris Fellow pin with two rubies reflecting his continued support of the Rotary Foundation. Past President Dean Casperson received a pin with four sapphires for his ongoing support.

Dan Maki encouraged the group to consider volunteering as parking attendants for the Tall Ships Festival. Volunteering for a 4-to-5-hour shift comes with free admission and a t-shirt. Friends and family members of Rotarians are welcome. Club #25 has the opportunity to earn up to $6,000 through our volunteer participation. Contact

Before swearing in new Club President Barb Perrella, outgoing President Chana Stocke took a few minutes to reflect on the past year. “It was a fun year, and the Club accomplished a lot including significant fundraising and grant making.” President Chana Stocke thanked new her leadership team and everyone who supported her throughout the year.

Newly sworn-in President Barb Perrella presented the Past President pin to Past President Chana Stocke and then swore in Gary Melander as President-Elect, as well as Director Chairs Rob Hofmann (New Generations), Greg Hansen (Fundraising) and Traci Marciniak as Board Secretary.

President Barb Perrella pledged to make the year fun and productive, all while making a difference in our community. Her three goals for the year include:
- Sustain the mental health program that Club #25 has funded at the Boys & Girls Club
- Relaunch the Junior Rotarian Program and the Rotaract Club
- Increase membership and participation of members in events
President Barb Perrella shared a commitment to continuing the Fireside Chat, as well as bringing back the monthly Friday morning fellowship breakfast.
The winning 50/50 ticket belonged to John Ohman, who walked away with $41.
