Highlights from Last Week’s Meeting
By Darlene Anderson

The annual joint meeting of Rotary Club 25 and Kiwanis Club of Duluth was held on Wednesday, November 23rd in the Holiday Inn Ballroom. Kiwanis Club President Josh Soderholm called the meeting to order and welcomed Rotarians, Kiwanians and guests. After the invocation by Kiwanian Dennis Anderson, all joined together singing the fourth verse of My Country Tis of Thee.

Rotary Past-President John Baumgarten reported that the 29th Annual Food Drive, coproduced by our two service clubs, has again been successful with more than $5,000 donated which, with promised matching funds, will result in over $15,000 of food delivered by Miners (SuperOne Foods) to the Salvation Army to help fill Christmas baskets. Thank you Rotarians and Kiwanians for your generosity!

Today the Kiwanis Club of Duluth honored two Duluth men in uniform who have faithfully served our community.

Duluth Fire Chief Shawn Krizaj presented the 2022 Firefighter of the Year award to Andrew Olson for his leadership and being a peer mentor.

Duluth Police Chief Mike Ceynowa presented newly retired police officer Jim Nilsson with the Life Saving Award for his actions saving the lives of two men involved in an accident on Skyline Drive. He also presented the Police Officer of the Year Award to Nilsson for his “cool and considerate” leadership during his 33 years of service.

Tis the season for “Truckers for Tots” and Mike Cooper of Mid-State Truck Service donned his Christmas hat to share the company tradition of raising funds and accepting unwrapped toys and educational supplies for kids.  The truckers use the donated funds to shop for toys and supplies at Fleet Farm and then coordinate with the Salvation Army for distribution. Last year the Duluth location contributed $13,000 to the Toys for Tots program. Donations or toys/educational supplies can be brought to their dealership at 3204 Carlton Street in Duluth.

Calling All Rotarians! Jerry Pelofske is looking for Rotarians to sign up to ring bells at local Super One stores on December 9 and 16 to benefit the Salvation Army. Time slots are from noon – 2 p.m. or 2 – 4 p.m.  Email him PELOF@aol.com or call 218-879-7416.
ROTARIANS AT WORK
“Service Above Self”

Rotarian Dan Dock led a large group of Club #25 Rotarians to serve Thanksgiving meals at Life House once again.  A hearty thanks to those Rotarians who personified our motto: Service Above Self!

Can you help solve a mystery? Past President Bill Gravelle hopes you can. Does anyone know the “story” of this certificate of appreciation??
