Amid buzzing conversation, President Elaine Hansen gave a hearty spring welcome to Rotary Club 25 members and guests. After the Pledge of Allegiance and Rotary 4-Way Test, Jeff Iisakka shared the beautiful imagery of air flight in his invocation, giving thanks for our ability to fly safely and view the stunning world below us. Fellowship Reporter Dave Holappa welcomed our visiting Rotarians, Brad Jensen from Harbortown, and Jireh Mabamba from Rotaract. Dave also led greetings to our guests, including Roger Reinert from Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation, Attorney Mark Knutson, Bryan Graddy from UMD, Kevin Mosier from Metro Sales and Eric Dott from Barr Engineering. Our many Rotarians in the media kicked the Golden Can, including Steve Yorde for wife Adele’s coverage of the Port opening, John Foucault for speaking about the ALS Blizzard Tour at Harbortown, Past PresidentSandy Hoff for being recognized for Duluth’s Lot D development, Jim Olson and Past President Dick Olson (and Skeeter Moore) for Trevor’s tie-making goal for UND in the NCAA West Regional, Bill Gronseth for the ISD 709 rubber mulch study, Dick Swenson for his shipping efforts on a rush order of needed parts, Past President Holly Sampson for newly hiring Roger Reinert at the DSACF, Past President Dave McLean for his brother-in-law’s new Hoops Brewery, Dave Holappa for his son’s 3-year coaching success, Todd Fedora for his wedding anniversary (did he really forget?), and UMD-ites Tricia Bunten, Rob Hoffman, President Elaine, Marc Seigar, Amy Galbraith, and Neale Roth were all called up for UMD’s Clean Snowmobile Team awards. A great day for the Golden Can!
All were reminded of the upcoming Prime Rib Dinner as Ryan Johnson tempted us all with the exciting auction items for that evening. Brad Jenson invited all to join the thrice-yearly meetings of Harbortown Rotary’s American Heritage Book Club. Next meeting is May 9, discussing “The Quartet” by Joseph Ellis.
Our speaker was proudly introduced by Chairperson of the Day, Past President Dave Allison. Rotary Club 25 members warmly cheered Gary Black, who serves as the Great Plains Regional Sales Director for Cirrus Aircraft in Duluth. After priming the audience with a “where’s he going with this” pilot-pirate story, Gary walked us through the exciting advancements of Cirrus, with the certification and recent launch of the Cirrus SF50 – Vision Jet. Proving to be quite popular already, the aircraft has a 6-year waiting list if one were to order today! This personal jet is most often flown by an owner vs. by a hired pilot. With the large panoramic views, “do it for you”-type instruments, seating room for five adults and two children, video monitors, XM weather reports and much more, many Rotarians were likely tempted to get their pilot’s license! Gary showed a demonstration of the aircraft’s revolutionary parachute system, and shared that the jet’s safety warning system does everything but slap the pilot in the face. Cirrus is now making 125 Vision Jets per year. Perhaps soon we will hear of fellow Rotarians flying this art-deco style beauty nonstop from here to Orlando. Gary concluded his remarks reminding us that today, and every day, is a good day to fly.

President Elaine thanked Gary for his presentation and shared that the book “Locomotion” will be donated in his honor to Lowell Elementary School. She expressed our shared condolences for the family of Curt Ahrens, whom we will honor next week. President Elaine also previewed next week’s meeting topics. The meeting concluded with Sandy Hoff winning the 50/50 Raffle, which he will certainly need to fund his ongoing Golden Can kicks.

Rotary Club 25 expresses its condolences to the family of Curt Ahrens, who passed on Monday, March 20th. The Club will remember Curt and his service to Rotary on Thursday, March 30th. Rob Hofmann, the Rotarian providing the eulogy at the meeting, has requested that remembrances of Curt from fellow Club 25 members be sent to him at rhofmann@d.umn.edu.
The Rotary Club 25 Office will be moving from the Radisson to the Holiday Center next week. The move begins on Tuesday with the phone and internet being installed at the new office. Then it continues Wednesday with other office equipment being moved and finally ends on Friday as all desks and other office items are moved. Next week, the office will not be prompt on replies to phone calls or voicemails. If you need to contact the office, please do so via email, bri@duluthrotary.org. The Youth & Community Service committee has organized a Spring Celebration Carnival at the Boys & Girls Club in Lincoln Park. The event will take place on Wednesday, April 12th 4:00– 6:00 pm. There are many volunteer opportunities available for this event.
1. 30 dozen cookies are needed for the event. We currently have 6 dozen volunteered.
2. On Wednesday, April 5th 4:00– 5:00 pm, the committee will be meeting in the new office to assemble some of the games for the carnival.
3. On the day of the carnival, volunteers are needed to help with setup at 3:30 pm and needed to run the games for the youth during the event.

Saturday, March 25th is the kickoff for the International Week of Service that runs through Friday, March 31st. There are several organizations volunteering to celebrate the week. These include: Lions Clubs International, Rotary International, Optimist International, Junior Chamber International, Kiwanis International, Moose International, Soroptimist, Y’s Men International, Pilot International, and Sertoma Inc. Rotary Club 25 does not have an event planned for this week but that does not mean you cannot find a way to volunteer during International Week of Service. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ’What are you doing for others?’”. This week find a way to practice Service Above Self!
The Fellowship Breakfast will be on Friday, March 31st at Northland Country Club starting at 7:30 a.m. This is a great time to meet other Rotarians or catch up with those you already know. This is also is a fantastic way to introduce guests or prospective new members to Rotary. Encourage other Rotarians to join you for an informal breakfast and think about bringing a guest. Have you ever stopped to think about “that new member” you introduced to the club. You- who proposed the name of “the new member”- your duty has just begun; he naturally looks to you for guidance and instruction.
Tell him that attendance is very important– don’t let him miss a single meeting for the first few months at least. When he misses a meeting during the first month and nothing is said to him about it he will soon miss another and then he has lost sight of the importance of his attendance, and soon he will be ready for the “dead ones”, but he doesn't know it and no one is willing to tell him.
See that he meets a lot of the older members, keep him interested and moving around with the fellows. Don’t let him sit with the same bunch of fellows every week; see that he mixes in. When a new member begins “mixing in”, then you have a Rotarian.
Of course, let us not forget that it is up to each and every member to do his part toward the new members as they cone to us, ready and willing and anxious to learn and live Rotary.
Come, it will do him a lot of good; BUT it will do you just a hundred per cent more good.
Rotary Club Ancona Conero invites you to join them to tour the Marche Region in Italy. The tour is organized in support of “END POLIO NOW”, and introduces members and their guests to the treasures of the Marche Region – its architecture, art, painting, nature, and cuisine. Even though the Marche is less well-known among Italian regions, it encompasses the country’s most distinctive features; hence its definition as “Italy in one Region”.
